SUMMARY:Missing Link for Sustainable Futures: Gender-Responsive Climate Policies
DESCRIPTION:Since COP28\, there is renewed commitment and momentum to address the public health impacts of climate change. The intersections of gender justice\, health equity\, and the climate crisis are critical yet often overlooked and under-funded aspects of sustainable development. Climate change poses significant challenges to global health\, exacerbating existing vulnerabilities and inequalities\, particularly for women and girls and other marginalized communities. Integrating gender and health—especially sexual and reproductive health and rights—into climate adaptation policies is essential for addressing these challenges comprehensively\, ensuring health equity and building resilient communities. \nAchieving the global commitments to gender equity and women’s health will require smarter\, climate-informed investments. Current investments at the nexus of gender-climate-health tend to be reactive\, disjointed\, and siloed. Coordinated\, evidence-based investment and innovation is urgently needed to ensure that women and girls have continuous\, uninterrupted access to the products and services they need in the face of compounding climate impacts and so they do not bear disproportionate health burdens due to climate change. Join us for a thought-provoking dialogue among policymakers\, funders\, researchers\, and civil society stakeholders on solutions to the climate crisis’ impact on gender equality and health equity goals.

SUMMARY:Partnerships of the Future: The Role of the Private Sector in Advancing Women’s Health and Well-being
DESCRIPTION:In the three decades following the landmark International Conference on Population and Development\, remarkable gains have been made in the quest for sexual and reproductive health and rights for all\, yet many women continue to be left behind. \nAccording to a recent report by the World Economic Forum\, women spend 25 percent more time in poor health relative to men. Further\, approximately 190 million women work in global supply chains\, and their needs – ranging from health care to protection from harassment and violence – are often neglected. \nAs we mark the Summit of the Future this year\, promoting gender equality and empowering and protecting all women and girls remain essential prerequisites to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. \nUNFPA has sought out a range of partnerships\, including in the private sector\, as well as financial approaches and other creative ways to achieve this mandate. Through the power of strategic partnerships\, UNFPA has joined forces with organizations to mobilize resources and leverage knowledge\, technology and innovation to achieve the transformative goals that benefit millions of women and girls globally. \nUNFPA\, in collaboration with Essity\, Organon and Reckitt and are co-hosting an event to be held on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly and the Summit of the Future under the theme “Partnerships of the Future: The Role of the Private Sector in Advancing Women’s Health and Well-being.” \nThe side event will serve to achieve the following objectives: \n\nCelebrate achievements\, reflect on progress and advance the principles of the International Conference on Population and Development.\nHighlight successful models of private sector partnerships and discuss concrete ways through which the private sector is mainstreaming the global agenda for women and girls in their operations and core business\, transforming commitments to action.\nPresent platforms of engagement for the private sector\, including the Equity 2030 Alliance and the Coalition for Reproductive Justice in Business\, and explore ways to unlock the brainpower\, influence and financing power of the private sector.\nCreate a space for members of the private sector to come together and support the agenda of the International Conference on Population and Development\, advance the actions of the Pact for the Future\, and move the dial on the health and rights of women and girls.\n\nRegistration available here.

SUMMARY:Her Power @ UNGA79: Turning Gender Equity Ambitions into Action
DESCRIPTION:Achieving gender equity sits at the core of a range of SDGs\, but ambitions have often failed to translate into actions and impact at scale. After decades of piecemeal progress\, including historic gains in women’s health and educational outcomes\, COVID-19 and a lack of prioritization have contributed to backsliding in these and various other areas that have undermined economic opportunity\, threatened security\, and had cascading impacts on societies writ large. As the international community gathers for a seminal UNGA featuring the once-in-a-generation Summit of the Future\, how can policymakers and stakeholders ensure that gender remains at the center of discussions\, rather than being included as an afterthought? And how can innovative programs and emerging technologies unlock opportunity and access for women around the world? At FP’s inaugural Her Power Forum @ UNGA79\, global gender experts\, policymakers\, and practitioners will discuss tangible solutions and actions to advance women’s equity and leadership. \nThis event will culminate in the premiere of a short documentary from Population Institute and a networking cocktail reception.

SUMMARY:Global Health Connector Event on Women's Health
DESCRIPTION:Women comprise approximately half of the world’s population\, yet their role in the global health care ecosystem is often underrepresented or inadequately considered. Women face unique challenges over the course of their lifespans\, due to biological sex differences in health and disease\, as well as sociocultural influences related to gender. Disparities exist across disease states and life stages that touch every race\, ethnic group\, geographic location\, and socioeconomic status. A comprehensive strategy to advance research on women’s health must be developed and implemented to address this global health deficiency. This series of sessions will discuss key developments and opportunities to advance women’s health through research\, with a focus on addressing female underrepresentation in clinical studies; the role of women in health care decision-making; and barriers to accessing care and improving health outcomes for women across the global landscape. Participants of the event will identify opportunities for domestic and global collaborations and inform the development of a women’s health research agenda in the Outcomes Report to the United Nations.

SUMMARY:Choose Choice: Securing Reproductive Choice for the Next Generation
DESCRIPTION: On the eve of The Summit of the Future\, we are encouraging existing and potential new leaders to act and to make bold and ambitious commitments to secure the reproductive rights of women and girls and the next generation\, to uplift reproductive choice on the global agenda and to galvanise further action that will enable a generation to choose choice.  \nThe power of reproductive choice has both individual impact and a ripple effect. It saves lives\, it enables girls to stay in school\, it helps women build careers and economic stability\, and it supports women to lead in their communities. Tomorrow’s world is shaped by the young people of today. With access to reproductive choice\, young people can have a choice and say in their futures.  \n2024 is a critical juncture – the midpoint of Agenda 2030 and the ambition of the Sustainable Development Goals and the 30th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development – a landmark commitment to universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).  \nThrough leadership and partnership there has been incremental progress in many parts of the world and as we look towards 2030 there is real opportunity for progress\, big and small\, on reproductive rights\, and much of it does not even require funding or legislation – it simply requires political will. However\, this trajectory of progress is under threat\, amid a global rollback on rights. Progress on issues such as bodily autonomy and reducing maternal death has slowed – and in some places even reversed. At this pivotal moment\, against a backdrop of the climate crisis\, geopolitical instability\, and inequality this event will recognise that access to SRHR is critical to a gender equal world and to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.  \nIt will mark our continued unwavering commitment to SRHR\, celebrate the global partnerships that have made progress possible and provide a platform to welcome government\, institutional donors and philanthropist pledges that will increase access to contraception and abortion.

SUMMARY:Climate Chaos\, SRHR Crisis: Weaving a Web of Strength\, Solutions and Solidarity
DESCRIPTION:Climate Chaos\, SRHR Crisis: Weaving a Web of Strength\, Solutions\, and Solidarity is a crucial side event at the Summit of the Future\, scheduled for September 21\, 2024.
